Increasing awareness and changing lifestyles have brought greater acceptance and importance to Psychiatry, a specialty that deals with diseases of the mind and behavior problems.

The department of psychiatry deals with various aspects of human mind. We have Adult Psychiatry Section dealing with major and minor psychiatric disturbances. De-Addiction Center treats addiction like alcoholism and substance abuse with medication and counseling.

Child Psychiatry Section has IQ-assessment scales for MR children and treats other behavior problems of children and adolescents. Changing family norms have made old age people much more vulnerable and our Geriatric Psychiatry part takes care of cognitive and other psychiatric disturbances of the aged.

A Psychiatric Social Worker, assisted by psychiatrist deals with Community Mental Health. Staff of the department regularly attends health camps conducted and has also given series of lectures to public for increasing awareness about mental illness.

The department has in its possession a 21 channel EEG machine. A brief pulse ECT machine, Weschler scale for IQ assessment and behavior therapy are other equipment.

The department is active in teaching and research. Undergraduates are regularly posted for clinical posting and regular theory classes are also conducted. Postgraduates from Department of General Medicine and Pediatrics are posted for training in psychiatry.
