Jamkhandi is a historic place once ruled by Raja Patwardhan of Poona during
pre-independence days. Foresighted Raja Patwardhan was a lover of education and
started educational institution at higher secondary level in a giant building in
the heart of the town. He extended his co-operation and support for spreading
education till the last day of his regime. There were no higher educational
institutes in Jamkhandi for the aspirants of this area to persue higher
education. However, Raja Patwardhan continued his support and help by inviting
outstanding students of this area to Poona for continuing higher education in S.
B. College and provided free board and lodging facilities even during
post-independence days.This was not sufficient enough to cover all the people belonging to
economically, educationally, socially backward classes. The need arouse to
fulfill the basic demand of the common people. Under such circumstances,
selfless service organization, the B.L.D.E. Association started Commerce, B.H.S.
Arts and T.G.P. Science College at Jamkhandi in 1963 and housed in the beautiful
palatial buildings situated on the hillocks of Jamkhandi.
The College is to the Karnatak University, Dharwad. The liberal donation from
Smt Bhagirathibai Hanumantagouda Savakar of Bidari (B.H.S.) and Sri
Gurusiddappagouda Patil of Tungal (T.G.P.) made the task of providing the
necessary infrastructure to this college more simple. The college was named
after the donors to commemorate it. Started with a meager number of just 200
students in the beginning, the strength has now risen to more than 2900. By
envisioning the instinctive talents of this semi-urban area, this college has
been adding knowledge and experience to the students of Krishna River belt in
its own unique way. The college has been imparting education in three faculty
namely, Arts, Science and Commerce at the under graduate level and P.G.D.C.A. at
the post graduate level and has become attractive centre for students from far
and wide.
The college has celebrated silver jubilee during the academic year 1990-91 and
heading towards golden jubilee. Over the period of more than four decades, the
college has also recorded in its name in producing graduates who have now been
serving in national and international sceneries. The trained and well qualified
teaching and non-teaching staff of the college is doing its best. To add
academic flavor to it, the college includes several Ph.D. and M.Phil laureates
to its privilege. N.C.C., N.S.S. and S.W.O. wings of the college have been
functioning to fulfill the aims and objectives satisfactorily, for which they
have been formed. There are well-equipped laboratories and library with large
number of books including volumes of recent editions and publications. Computer
Science, Physics and Electronics departments have also been shaping the students
to fit them for technical jobs
B.B.A. course has been started from the academic year i.e. 2005-06.
Well-furnished sports department has been training the students to the standards
of University blues in various games every year. The college has produced
national and international level sportsmen to its reputation. Since the
inception of the college, it is known for its mode of conduct of examination and
is a model in the entire area coming under the jurisdiction of the Karnatak
University. About 46 students of our college have secured ranks at the
University level till this academic year 2006-07.
Miss Pinky Shah has secured
first rank in B.Sc. to the Karnatak University with record
percentage of marks last year and also she has bagged four gold medals
for having secured highest marks in Mathematics and Statistics. This year Miss.
Afreen Anure and Miss. Afroza Momin have secured First and Second rank
respectively in B.Sc. to the Karnatak University with record percentage of
marks. Ladies hostel, Gents hostel, Health Fitness Centre, Historic Mammoth Polo
ground, Botanical garden with special and very rare species and campus with over
40 acres of open land are the special features of this college.
The construction work of swimming pool at the estimated cost of Rs. 46.46 lakh
with partial financial assistance from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports,
Govt. of India, New Delhi was inaugurated at the Holy hands of Mr. Oscar
Fernades, the then Central Minister for Sports.
During the last three years the college has constructed eight big lecture halls
and Physics & Computer laboratories at the approximate cost of Rs. 75 lakh. Four
more lecture halls are constructed newly this year and is ready for
inauguration. The college was recognized by the University Grants Commission and
was included in the list of 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956. The college has
been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with
B+ grade three years back. The Local Advisory Governing Body has been guiding,
supervising and facilitating to improve the campus activities qualitatively.
